A member of Uruguay's savannah ecoregion / Un miembro de la ecoregión pradera de Uruguay |

The unique grasslands, palm savannas and gallery forests of this ecoregion cover a vast area of southern South America including the entire country of Uruguay.
The savannas are critically endangered due to the fact that there are few small isolated patches of intact habitat remaining. The whole ecoregion has been severely altered by cattle ranching- one of the main pillars of the national economy in Uruguay.
Las singulares praderas, savanas de palmeras y montes galerías de esta ecoregión cubren una vasta área al sur de Sudamérica incluyendo la totalidad del campo uruguayo.
Las savanas están criticamente amenazadas debido a que sólo persisten pequeñas áreas de hábitat intacto. |

Uruguay's psamophilic or sand dune vegetation is distributed along the estuary and marine shores and in certain interior zones of the country.
Given its location and fragility the dune ecosystem has probably been the most modified by human activity, bringing about a negative impact on its wild dwellers.
En Uruguay la vegetación psamofílica o de dunas está distribuída a lo largo de las costas del estuario y marinas y hasta en ciertas zonas del interior del país. Dada su localización y fragilidad, el ecosistema de dunas ha sido posiblemente el más modificado por la actividad humana y ello ha causado un impacto negativo en sus moradores salvajes. |

The Southern Cross constellation is eagerly sought by travelers from the North, visiting the Southern Hemisphere. The amazing colors are barely recognized by the naked eye, because most stars are too faint to stimulate color receptors in our retinas. The cross has four main stars marking the tips (alpha shown in #1, beta, gamma and delta). Alpha centauri is a triple star system and the closest to the sun.
Naturally I had to use a tripod to take this shot and kept the shutter open for just 15 seconds. A longer exposure would have captured trails instead of dots due to the Earth's rotation
La Cruz del sur es afanadamente buscada por viajeros del norte que visitan el hemisferio septentrional. Los sorprendentes colores son apenas visibles por el ojo desnudo porque la mayoría de las estrellas son demasiado tenues para estimular nuestros receptores de color en la retina. La cruz posee cuatro estrellas principales (alfa, mostrada en #1, beta, gama y delta). Alfa centauri es un sistema estelar triple y es el más cercano al sol.
Naturalmente tuve que usar un trípode para capturar esta foto, dejando el obturador abierto por menos de 15 segundos. Una exposición más alta hubiese producido líneas en lugar de puntos, debido a la rotación de la Tierra. |

The White-winged coot is found on freshwater lagoons, ponds and marshes where it prefers sandy or grassy shores. Its bill is yellowish while its shield can vary in colour from pale yellow to bright orange. It is speculated that this might be related to the age of the birds
La gallareta se encuentra en lagunas de agua dulce, estanques y marismas donde prefiere particularmente las orillas arenosas o con pasto. Su pico es amarillento mientras que su foseta suele variar del amarillento al naranja brillante. Se especula que esto podría estar relacionado con la edad de las aves |

In Uruguay, bamboo doesn't play a dominant role in forestry. As in the majority of Latin America countries, bamboo exploitation is generally confined to local use of native species in areas close to the source of supply. There is no control over the removal of native bamboos from riverbanks by people, and this has created a shortage of bamboo resources over many years.
En Uruguay la caña no posee un rol dominante en la forestación. Como en la mayoría de los países Latinoamericanos, la explotación de la misma se confina al uso local de especies nativas en áreas cercanas a la zona donde crecen. No existe control sobre la remoción de las cañas nativas en las orillas de los ríos por la gente y ello ha creado una escasez de éstas a lo largo de los años |

Weevils are specialized beetles with an elongated head and a protruding, often curved snout that bears the mouthparts and antennae. Most weevils are plainly or concealingly colored, but a few are bright. Adults are commonly found on flowers and fruit, often escaping potential predators by "playing possum"--that is, pretending to be dead.
Los gorgojos son escarabajos especializados con cabeza elongada y hocico alargado en el que alberga las estructuras bucales y las antenas. La mayoría de los gorgojos son de colores poco vistosos, siendo la minoría coloridos. Los adultos son comúnmente encontrados sobre las flores y frutas, a menudo escapándose de los predadores potenciales "haciéndose los muertos" cuando son atacados
